Dressmaker Game Beginner Guide

The commission loop, the four crafting stations and what to know before launch.

Facts last checked: September 14, 2026 · full re-check at launch on September 21, 2026

Pre-release coverage: everything below comes from official store pages, press previews and demo hands-on. We re-verify every fact at launch on September 21, 2026.

The Core Loop

The official store page describes one full commission rhythm — this is the loop you repeat, dress after dress:

  1. Take a commission. Townsfolk arrive with individual measurements, personal tastes and event deadlines from the town's social calendar.
  2. Choose your fabric — cotton, linen, wool, silk, velvet and more, each with its own look and drape. See the fabrics guide.
  3. Arrange and cut the pattern. Whether a piece sits on the grain or is cut on bias shows on the final dress. See the cutting guide.
  4. Sew it together on the vintage-style machine — an infinite bobbin means thread never runs out; control is the challenge. See the sewing guide.
  5. Finish by hand: buttons, bows, appliqué and lace trims. See patterns & decorations.
  6. Deliver the dress to earn reputation and coin, unlock new fabrics and accessories at the emporium — then take the next commission.

Satisfying customers is the default route; the store page also teases the opposite in its own words — satisfy (or sabotage!) — though how sabotage actually plays has not been shown in detail anywhere official.

What to Do First

There is no Steam demo. If you want to try the game before September 21, 2026, the official build is the free itch.io prototype (v0.5.5). We have not run a launch playthrough yet, so this is a first-hour briefing, not a quest chain:

  1. Treat it as a craft table, not a dress-up closet. You pick fabric, lay pattern pieces, cut, sew, then decorate. Placement and print direction show on the finished dress — see cutting and sewing.
  2. Slow the machine before corners. Press coverage of the prototype calls sewing the hardest station. v0.4 added speed and sensitivity settings for that.
  3. If sewing with a mouse is physically hard, the full game adds a Sewing Assist toggle in Options: press Space and the machine tries to turn for you (developer reply, itch comments). The frozen prototype does not have it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do first in Dressmaker?

Play the free itch prototype if you want to try before buying — there is no Steam demo. Slow the sewing machine before corners, and watch grain vs bias on the cutting table. Sewing Assist (Space) is a full-game Options toggle, not in the prototype.

How long is Dressmaker?

September Tea says story commissions last about 35 hours, excluding off-rack dresses. That is the official story-length figure, not a timed playthrough of this wiki.

Do I need to know how to sew in real life?

No. The official presskit states no dressmaking knowledge is needed — the game teaches its own simplified version of each step: pattern layout, cutting, machine sewing and hand-finishing.
